John 1:1-5 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
It seems that the Lord moves in the darkest of times in order to display His glory. Apparently something catastrophic had happened to creation before the biblical account of creation begins. How do I know that? It says in Genesis that the earth was formless and void and darkness was on the surface of the deep. The Hebrew words describing the earth are quite graphic describing a devastated world covered in darkness. If you know the Lord that is not how He creates things. Apparently our creation story is a story of restoration and redemption. When the Lord spoke, “let there be light” the darkness was destroyed. In a similar way the Lord moves in our world at the darkest moments in history. The Roman occupation of Israel is a great example of that, there was no chance of Israel getting out from under the clutches of Rome. That is the moment that the Word became flesh and came to live among us, the true light was piercing the darkness once again. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this.
“When God began to make the world and put it into order and cause light to shine, it was a chaos, in a state of utter confusion, “without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep”. So commonly things are in a state of great confusion before God works some great and glorious work in the church and in the world, or in some particular part of the church or world, and oftentimes towards particular persons. . . . So we may expect it should be before the beginning of the glorious times of the church of God, and after this confusion, light will be the first thing that will appear —light, clearly to explain and defend the truth.”
So maybe, just maybe, we are in one of those dark seasons again when mankind has fallen into a time of devastating sinful behavior, only God’s light can break this darkness. Maybe the Lord is about to visit the earth once again.
