Jn.6:35 – Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Jesus was introducing His most controversial teaching in this message, it was really impossible for any of His followers to understand what He was even talking about. This was something they would understand after His death and resurrection. Communion is central to our Christian faith, in it we find forgiveness of sin, healing for our bodies, and an intimate fellowship with the Lord where we receive life itself into our being. Many of His followers could not take this in, the body of Christ was now our food and the blood of Jesus was our drink. This made no sense to the unrenewed mind, we can only begin to comprehend it now because of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this.
“The grace of Christ Jesus, it nourishes the soul; it gives life and strength to it. Before the soul receives this grace, it is dead. In this it doth more than bread does to the body, that does but preserve the life of the body and revives it when weakened and languishing; but this heavenly food revives men when dead. And it also continues the life of the soul: the soul, after it is revived, would die again, were it not for the continuance of supply of grace and spiritual nourishment. It strengthens the soul as food does the body. The soul in its natural condition is a poor, feeble, languishing thing, having no strength; but the grace of Christ makes it strong and vigorous. And this spiritual nourishment makes the soul to grow, as food doth the body. The supplies of the Spirit of God increase the life and vigor of the soul, increases the understanding, increases holy inclinations and affections…”
Communion, eating the body and drinking the blood of Jesus is connected to the enjoyment of God. Understanding communion takes us out of the ceremonial, formal perception of Christianity into the experiential side. We enjoy God because this is how we are made, the center of our being longs for this communion with the Lord. Nothing else can fill this eternal longing that is part of our human nature. To know Him personally is the highest blessing of our human existence, feasting on God is where we discover exactly what our life is all about.
