Jn.1:16-18 – And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
Only the Lord could display His overwhelming glory in His deity and at the same time show us His shocking humility as a man. The only begotten Son of God became a human, He spent thirty three years here as a man and then, after His death, entered into heaven as a man. It is impossible to comprehend the incredible condescension required for Him to become one of us. At the same time He began to show His glory in His humanity. It began with the angelic announcement of His birth, continued with a life of signs and wonders, then there was His death and resurrection, all followed by His ascension into heaven. All of those point to the uniqueness of the Son of God. We are now sons of God but their is a distinct difference between our sonship and His. Here is how Martin Luther explains that.
“Here John expresses who the Word is, of whom he and Moses have been speaking, namely, the only begotten Son of God, who has all the glory of the Father. He calls Him the only begotten, so as to distinguish Him from all the children of God, who are not natural children as this one is. With these words is shown His true divinity; for if he were not God, he could not in preference to others be called the only begotten Son, which is to say that he and no other is the Son of God. This can not be said of angels and pious men. For not one of them is the Son of God, but are all brethren and creatures of a like creation, children elected by grace, and not children born out of God’s nature.”
So we are created by God and then adopted into sonship. With Jesus it is not the same, He is not created but He is the eternal Son of God, begotten eternally by the Father. We are purchased by God, Jesus is the very radiance of the Father’s glory. When we see Him for ourselves we will better understand this mystery. The angels and seraphim as well as the elders and the redeemed from every generation are now caught up worshipping the Son of God. One day soon we will join the heavenly celebration.
