WONDERFUL – WONDERFUL – WONDERFUL

Isa.9:6 – For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

If I had to pick I would say this is my most favorite prophesy dealing with the birth of the Messiah and His coming kingdom. Every word of every line in this verse is loaded with divine revelation. It starts with a Child is born, and a Son is given. This small phrase describes the humanity and deity of Christ all at once. He is the human child born of a woman and He is also the Son of God, begotten by the Father through eternity. This phrase also reminds us of the personal nature of the Messiah, this Child- this Son was given for us and to us. He is our personal friend and Savior. Then Isaiah describes the sovereign nature of this One. The government, literally the rule of all things rests upon Him. Nations, churches, families, and individual lives all are resting on His power, wisdom, and goodness. This Child would be the sovereign Lord. Then Isaiah proclaims in rapid fire the attributes of this King. He would be wonderful or pele, the Hebrew word that literally means miracle. Everything about this One would be a miracle. He would be called Counselor, He is the revelation of God’s wisdom and Word. He is all knowing even in His humanity today. He is the Mighty God, Isaiah was prophesying the unthinkable – the Messiah would be a human born as a child yet He would be the Almighty God. Isaiah also called Him Everlasting Father. This touches on the eternal nature of the Son of God. He has been with the Father from eternity. He has been born to bring us into this everlasting family being loved by the Father as a son. Isaiah finishes this blast of revelation calling the Lord the Prince of Peace. Of course this is the well known Hebrew word shalom. This peace encompasses our whole being; spirit, soul, and body. We are born again and experience peace with God. This relationship also brings peace into our soul, healing and restoration of broken hearts is what He does. Finally, this peace/shalom brings wholeness into our body. We are made whole by the touch of the Prince of Peace.

2700 years after this prophetic word was first spoken it still pierces the darkness and wins our hearts to the Lord. Glory to God, the Savior has been born and He lives in our hearts today.
