Heb.1:5-7 – For to which of the angels did He ever say,
“YOU ARE MY SON,
TODAY I HAVE FATHERED YOU”?
And again,
“I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM
AND HE WILL BE A SON TO ME”?
And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says,
“AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.”
And regarding the angels He says,
“HE MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS,
AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE”
In my years of Christian experience I have seen the ebb and flow of different emphases in the Christian world. We have gone through the discipleship phase, the casting out demons phase, the apostolic/prophetic phase, and the flag and banners phase. A couple of times there has been an enhanced emphasis on angels. Maybe all of this is good and a way for the Lord to introduce things back into His church but often times these things can become diversions from Christ Himself. Paul dealt with an over emphasis on angels in his book to the Colossians. Obviously angels are active in the New Testament world, but only Christ is the object of our prayer and devotion. Here is how Murray describes this in today’s passage.
“It is because Christ is the Son of God that He is higher than the angels, and that the New Testament is so much higher than the Old. If we would grasp the teaching, and get the blessing of our Epistle, and indeed become partakers of the inner power and glory of the redemption Christ hath brought, we must tarry here in deep humility until God reveals to us what it means, that His only Son has become our Savior. The infinite excellence of the Son above the angels is the measure of the excellence of that heavenly life He brings and gives within us. The angels could tell of God and of life. The Son has, the Son is, that life of God, and gives it. He that hath the Son, hath life.”
Christ is greater than the angels to the degree that infinite is greater than finite. After all, He created the angels. They are ministering spirits sent out to minister to God’s sons and daughters. Hebrews was written to center us. In it we are being called back into a place of intimacy with the Lord. Jesus is the only way into that place of holiness, power, and unspeakable joy.
